About Us

Our Vision

Healthy Ugandans Living to their Fullest Potential.

Our Mission

To advance health access equity, economic empowerment, legal and protection rights, and climate justice through integrated, multidisciplinary, and rights-based approaches that empower vulnerable populations across Uganda.

Who we are.

A Pen For Africa (APFAF) was founded by a cancer survivor whose journey through illness revealed the urgent need for equitable health systems, legal protections, and climate-responsive development for Uganda’s most vulnerable communities. Drawing on her legal expertise, lived experience, and community-based research, she established APFAF as a women-led, rights-driven NGO committed to dismantling structural exclusion and advancing sustainable change.

Guided by its vision—Healthy Ugandans Living to their Fullest Potential—APFAF’s mission is to advance health access equity, economic empowerment, legal and protection rights, and climate justice through integrated, multidisciplinary, and rights-based approaches.

APFAF’s work is grounded on it’s strategic objectives.

Our Strategic Objectives

To improve access to equitable, inclusive health services and psycho-social support, especially for under-served and structurally excluded populations.

To integrate climate change adaptation and mitigation into community resilience efforts, with a focus on health, agriculture, and environmental stewardship.

To build resilient livelihoods and enhance economic agency for women, youth, and marginalized groups through skills development and value chain interventions

To strengthen access to justice and protection mechanisms through legal aid, rights education, and systemic advocacy.

Our Story

The inception of A Pen For Africa (APFAF) is deeply intertwined with the personal odyssey of a cancer survivor whose fortitude and commitment to philanthropy, especially within the medical domain, culminated in the establishment of this impactful organization. Following a successful battle with cancer, the survivor felt a compelling urge to contribute to the well-being of others. This profound experience served as the genesis of APFAF, an NGO committed to disseminating knowledge and extending support to individuals affected by cancer and other chronic ailments.

During her own treatment, the survivor immersed herself in extensive research on cancer, acquiring invaluable insights into diverse factors such as climate, sexuality, nutrition, and lifestyle that influence cancer development. Drawing on her legal background, she approached these issues through the prism of human rights, recognizing the imperative of raising awareness about these crucial issues.

However, the survivor’s journey was fraught with challenges. Feelings of isolation and the specter of mortality often haunted her nights, prompting her to establish APFAFs distinctive night psychosocial care sessions for long-term illness patients. These sessions are designed to offer solace and solidarity to individuals grappling with similar adversities, serving as a beacon of hope during their darkest moments.
